I came in with middling expectations, but was happily surprised. The formula of dramatic reenactment interspersed with talks from leading historians and writers was effective. I consider myself fairly well-read in the Civil War so I knew much of what was presented but was still engaged. I'm looking forward to the next two episodes, particularly to see how Grant's General Orders No. 11--the expulsion of Jews from Kentucky, Mississippi and Tennessee--and Battle of Cold Harbor are treated, the two missteps of a great man. All in all, this is a well-produced and frequently fascinating program. I also agree with others about the commercials. There were many and poorly integrated into the program. I will DVR the remaining two episodes and watch with more of the series pace restored.
