CC’s honest review: the idea to remake ff7 is 12 years in the making and I am beyond excited that it’s here. After playing however, I am conflicted. Let’s start off saying the game looks great and completely succeeded in recapturing and elevating the look and feel of it’s predecessor. The characters are great and the voice acting isn’t bad (considering the original game had only subtitles this was a concern).
The original FF7 was a huge game and you had hidden characters, weapons, accessories, and even decisions that changed the storyline. Unfortunately, this remake has few secrets, almost impossible to miss key weapons and even does the “illusion of choice” it pretends like you get to make decisions but they have no impact on the game besides a 2 min cutscene in chapter 14 and dresses for the trio during the wall market section, which unlike the original also results in no story differences.
The battle system is a thing of contention. It’s in between devil may cry slashing and the original turn base for more powerful attacks. I personally don’t like it, but it’s not terrible. Button smashing will happen but it’s no where as good as god of war or other slashing titles....and the turn base system fails to meet the complexity and strategy of the original. There are not as many types or combinations of materia...considering you will not be able to carry over your inventory to ff7 remake 2 they could have added more materia types. all in all the battle system is too easy (even on hard mode) and its watered down compared to the original. Not really a strategy game not really a slashing game. If you never played the first game this is probably a 8/10. However, if you loved the original and you where hoping for a “remake” then you probably will feel conflicted as I do. You probably wanted this to be a more in depth game to answer the questions left open in the first, instead you will find yourself looking for children and other tangential side quest that doesn’t add anything to the story ....even worse the director thought it would be a good idea to convolute an already complicated story with the terminator/Star Trek approach and play with the idea of time travel and Alternate universes? What? Really? You guys made one of the best rpg of all time and you decided you could do better? Well good luck, but you already muddled the story and so far in my opinion those small changes to the storyline is already less shocking/intriguing than the original and it shouldn’t be called “remake” because obviously you didn’t remake the original. I guess I will play FF7 on my iPad and try to forget this mistake has happened
