Best movie of the year so far and one of the best I’ve seen ever. I don’t really understand the criticism. I get the it was supposed to be a Viking movie argument some what but everything else is nonsense.
Amleth does grow throughout the movie. He goes from a blood thirsty savage to a man trying to protect his family in the end. Sacrificing himself for his family as a man should.
And the characters are well developed. They’re just much more complex than most movie characters are nowadays. You have to figure it out for yourself. Everyone in the end is far different than what you thought they were originally. Amleth and Olga are perfect contrasts for each other. He is all about brute force and blood shed while she focuses on destroying her enemies through their minds.
While the uncle is supposed to be this evil man that killed his brother to take his kingdom. He turns out to be a loving husband and father. Nicole Kidman is the trophy for the uncle’s triumph over his brother but it turns out she wanted it all to happen.
It’s a story that’s much more complex than anything we have nowadays. You really have to pay attention.
It’s a story about how humans think we have one goal. Whatever that is we blindly follow it. But sometimes things get thrown our way and our priorities need to change. For example, at the end he kills his uncle to protect his family instead of for revenge.
Does the one thing movies nowadays either can’t or refuse to do. Make a strong male and female character. Amleth is more for the physical stuff. But Olga is truly incredibly written. She is strong in the ways a typical strong woman is instead of basically turning her into a man. She’s caring, loyal, very calculated. Knowing she really can’t help physically because of her physical limitations. She destroys her enemies in different, much more methodical ways. Which is realistic which is something this movie shines at.
Overall, terrific movie. Deserves best picture so far. Either Alexander or Anya needs to win an academy award. Hopefully we get more stuff like this from Eggars in the future.
