A tragic story about a little girl's life mid 19th century Dublin. She is unwanted and shunned by society having been cared for by a Nanny-figure who is being paid by the wealthy family "Albert" was born to illegitimitly. When 14 years old, the Nanny dies and leaves Albert alone to fend for herself.
One night she is brutelly raped by 5 men leaving her alone, beaten, shamed and probably never wanting to be touched by a man again.
There was an available job as a waiter that she showed up for and being they were understaffed she was hired. Since 14, this young girl only knew how to play the role of a man to survive. Alberts life was secretive and lonely, but being a surviver learned to play the role very well.
The character is much older when introduced in the film. Albert, not even knowing her real name, has forgotten what it means to be a girl. She never learned.
She has only lived as a man in a mans world.
I dont believe this was due to being "gay" or "trans" as some people writting a review have eluded to. It was the hand she was dealt in life and rather than curl up and die, she chose to live any way necessary.
