The overall mood evoked throughout Midnights is hopelessness. I enjoyed the album more upon a second listen, but these are not sad songs in a cathartic way; instead, the songs bring the listener down into its resentful world of angst and an aura of revenge.
This bleak atmosphere is created by a combination of lyrics, muted instrument tones, and a somber trap beat that never evolves into any feeling of hope whatsoever.
I appreciate that Swift boldly tries new directions with no regard for public reception. But after these last two albums, perhaps it’s time she gave more consideration to her fans.
