The ‘elegance of the hedgehog’ brought me to this book. Although others didn’t like the flowery descriptions, I utterly enjoyed them. I’ve never been to Japan but the culture and history has a mysterious attraction over me. I found so much fascination in the descriptions and made me feel that I was there, enjoying of it all. I felt completely immersed in the story but mostly in the surroundings. Very different from the one book I read before, from this author, but equally sweet and different from my own perspective. I read the Hedgehog in French and Rose in Spanish, both rich verbal languages that perhaps gave a different tint to my experience.

In my opinion this movie is not for the average audience, it’s for the mature, more profound and philosophical ones. The last scene together, spent in silence said so much, they were practically shouting to each other but without a voice. Great actors, loaded with energy and chemistry. I think she chose correctly, contrary to what other reviewers wrote. She chose her present life and in fact, this is what normalcy should be. Who existed before belongs to our past. I liked the husband who gave him a place because what comes first is first, no matter what. Well written, well acted. Too slow at times and too many phrases never said but they’re there, that’s the magic of cinema, they know partially but we ‘see’ the whole picture. I gave it 4 stars for the slow pace that in my view did not add to the movie.
