I never leave reviews for movies, but never in my life has a movie struck me this way, has left me so entirely speechless.
While it hangs audiences in utter confusion at the beginning, the way it unravels and slowly reveals itself is unlike anything I've ever experienced before. Having that heartbreaking "oh" moment when you realize the significance of something that you saw in the opening sequence is a gut-wrenching experience that I would relive a million times over. I feel as though I would notice something new every time.
This movie became so much more than I had ever expected it to be: I had thought it was only the backwards re-living of a relationship as the memories got erased. Instead, it became an intricate and heartbreaking look at what it means to share intimate experiences with someone, and calls into question the true power of our experiences, regardless of if we remember them or not. Joel and Clementine's lives became forever changed by their experiences together, and they give a beautiful portrayal of the impact that one person can have on someone's life. No man is an island, everyone is made up of their experiences, memories, and parts of the people they've loved.
Kate Winslet and Jim Carrey's performances were incredible, as always.
I would watch this movie a million times over. I wouldn't need to medically forget it in order to enjoy it each and every time, haha
