Animal turns out to be a very average film.Keep aside the problematic part, let's talk about the parts which define a movie.
Screenplay - A very weak screenplay with not enough scope given for character development of the father (Anil Kapoor) nor the son (Ranbir Kapoor). A father not giving enough attention cannot solely justify Ranvijay's (Ranvbir Kapoor) character arc.(P.S. This guy has a criminal tendency and the only solution he needed was a psychologist from the very beginning). The main theme of the film as a result of the father-son relationship falters miserably to the point that the concluding scene doesn't impact you at all.The love story between Ranbir and Rashmika has been established quite poorly and is something that cannot be related with. Now, coming to the plot of the film. It's a very old school family feud wala ghisa-pita plot with nothing new to offer. Even, the screenplay has not been designed in such a manner to keep you intrigued.
The villain's character development has been extremely poor. They are killed as soon as they are introduced.
Extended interval block seems absurd. There is not enough development to the scene. I agree the shots were stylised, but you can see the other side standing idle while Ranbir does his action choreography. The song Arjan Vailley as a result has no impact at all. The entire theatre where I was sitting was not bothered at all as to what is going on in this scene and had already taken out their phones. This is purely a result of poor screenplay.
Thank God, we reached the first half of this film.
Now, the second half started with the aftermath and soon went into unnecessary comic scenes, followed by unnecessary new love angle with Tripti (again, a result of poor script. If Ranbir from the beginning knew she was a mole why did he sleep around with her.) All, this was done to add another angle of extra-marital affair. All this seemed half-baked. Few scenes, sub-plots have been simply kept to provoke the critics. Vanga as a writer makes some commentaries based on these sub-plots which are reflective of his thinking.
Finally, we come to the concluding moments of the film and the fight scene with Bobby Deol was good but again as his character arc was written poorly, one could not enjoy it to the fullest.
Movie ended with a scope for the 2nd part, but there wasn't enough plot in the 1st one. Only God knows what less the 2nd one will have.
Background Score/Songs - Songs on an individual level are beautiful but the main songs Arjan Vailley and Saari Duniya Jala Denge don't give the boost which was expected.
The background score is good, but it falters during the main interval block.
Other songs are soulful. Especially, the one with Tripti Dimri. However, it seemed out of place. The lyrics do not add to the scenes.
Acting - The only saving grace for the film is the acting of Ranbir Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna, Anil Kapoor (he was not given enough scope though). Other supporting actors are good and act to their respective roles. Bobby Deol cannot be judged as it was like he wasn't there in the film at all but honestly what he did was alright.
The only poor actor in this film was Babloo Prithviraj. (but again, needed more of his role to judge it properly).
Conclusion - Overall, this movie can be easily ignored and fails on the line of basic film-making.Also, the movie was exhaustingly long. Could've been easily trimmed by 40-45 minutes.
