While the cinematography is GORGEOUS, there is nothing that really guides the plot along in a meaningful way. It’s like they filmed all these beautiful shots and then had to figure out how to weave it together. It ends up feeling like a film school project that attempts to be artsy, but with no sense of how to deliver the intended vision.
And while I love films that make use of visuals to tell a story rather than dialogue, this film just plunks you down into some convoluted situation without any real idea as to why it’s happening and why the characters are doing the things they do. To top it all off, the pieces of the storyline that could provide that context or at least allow you to identify with or empathize with characters are either shot as a montage with no real context or you get a flash of text saying, “one year later.”
