I saw Black Adam today. It is, in my opinion, an EXCELLENT movie in terms of just having fun. The movie is not very profound, but then neither are most superhero flicks.
The point is just to have a good time seeing good overcome evil. Given all the bad news that we are treated to each day in the real world, a little old-fashioned "good guy saves the day" is most welcomed.
I didn't rate this movie 5 stars primarily because I concur with the sentiment that the kid on the skateboard received far too much airtime. He became quite annoying, as did the overweight guy who was the female revolution leader's brother. With these two characters, I thought the movie tried too hard to be funny, and in the process lost any real depth that it strived for.
Dwayne Johnson's character -- Black Adam -- did a great job balancing his rage with his inner goodness. I also thought Quintessa Swindell (Cyclone) and Aldis Hodge (Hawkman) were fabulous in their superhero roles. I would love to see each of them get their own superhero flicks in the near future.
Pierce Brosnan (Dr. Fate) did a stellar job playing the elder wise man. I thought his bond with Hawkman was one of the few profound aspects of the movie.
I'm not a big fan, per se, of Dwayne Johnson, namely because I am not convinced that he takes pride in his racial heritage as the real life son of a Black man. My critique is based on the Hollywood families that Dwayne Johnson mostly ends up with.
However, I applaud him for introducing a wonderfully diverse cast in this movie. I think all children (adults as well) should be able to see superheroes who look like them. That should not be the sole province of one group of people.
Black Adam is a great and momentous start on the path to diversifying superheroes in Hollywood. With equality, in the end we all win.
Thank you, Mr. Johnson, for the work you did to give us all Black Adam. It was a remarkable movie and I plan to purchase the video when it is released. Well done, sir!
