I suspect this is Bernstein’s vailed attempt at allegory… the plight of the Jewish people. I also suspect the majority of readers will slam the book shut within the first 20 pages. Academics may appreciate it as did the Giller panel. It is self absorbed and pretentious. Depressing. Did I force myself to read it to the end? Yes but only because I could not resist the opportunity for analysis.
