I enjoyed the book and was so connected to the characters because I grew up in the same time period, the book brought back so many memories. I was excited to finish the book before watching the show. I have read other books by Kristen Hannah and I am a fan.
So, if you never read the book, you will likely enjoy the show-- it's okay, another typical but unbelievable series.
But, if you are a fan of Kristen Hannah and read the book, WOW, what a complete disappointment. I wonder if the writer/producer even read the book??? This adaptation is cringeworthy. The back and forth in time is also conpletely off the rails...just adds to the disjointedness of the whole show. The book is a timeline, and you grow up with these girls, that is why you learn to love them so much. The show just goes back and forth so the audience never really gets to know them and their development.
I am so saddened by the changes to Kate's character and the addition and exclusion of so many plot lines. The trueness and compassionate feelings in the book are lost. The whole point of the best friends journey through adolescence, college years and differences in mothering, sexual assault, body acceptance, etc. that so many real women can understand was completely thrown out for more racey and unintelligent versions of Kate and Tully. And the changes to both mothers, especially Kate's is just sad. I can't even begin to say how unhappy I am about this "version" if it can even be called that...my advice: read or listen to the audio version of the book.
Kristen Hannah-please be more involved in future adaptation of your books to film. Don't let "them" rewrite your stories!!
