This is feel good movie and was enjoyable so long as I ignored the facts. What makes this story so compelling is the hardships that the individual crew members had to deal with before arriving at the US Boat House. So much of that story was left out of the movie.
There could have been greater tension had the director explored their personal hardships more and conversely the victory would have been even sweeter. These were throw away boys, who in the end found support and loyalty for each other until they were an unbeatable team.
The cinematography, particulary the overhead drone shots of the competing rowing shells was beautiful. The actors did the best they could with the script.
Great stories in book form rarely get all the details when it's made into a movie, The Boys in the Boat falls short. The background of the boys could have been better betrayed through flashback or dialogue.
It's such a compelling story and this film falls short. Maybe they should have called it "The Boys in the Boat Lite" or "Rocky goes rowing"
Still as I said, it's en enjoyable film if you haven't read the book.
