Sweet Magnolias is a plot-less show that ignores real issues (except divorce, which I thought was pretty well portrayed). The town Sherryl Woods has created is a utopia, a perfect, beautiful place where nothing goes wrong. Honestly, it is definitely a town I would want to live in. However, this type of setting does not create any sort of conflict to drive the plot forward, leaving the characters to set-up their own problems. This is unfortunate considering how poor the acting is in this series.
Sweet Magnolias also rubs me the wrong way for a few other reasons. First, all the characters have the same religion and are all straight. (I realize these might change in the next season) The amount of Christian propaganda is sicking, and I am shocked that Netflix, a usually open-minded company, would create such an not-diverse world. Also, in the town of Serenity racism seems to not exist. What Southern town is really like that? It also speaks to the kind of world Woods sees/wants. I'm all for a place with no racism, but no other kinds of diversity? Definitely not.
It seems to me that Sherryl Woods just created a story line as bland as a Communion wafer and Netflix (for whatever reason) decided to shove it down our throats.
