This has to be one of the most perplexing & bizarre movies ever made. Yet when I first saw it as a teenager I was first blown away by its visuals, special affects, soundtrack and its seemingly optimistic message of man’s next big step. But later on I realized that you have to remember that this is a Stanley Kubrick film, NOT a Steven Spielberg film. Which means it’s not a feel-good movie but a very deep and coded film where there’s literally a lot more going on than meets the eye. In fact, like all of Kubrick’s films, there’s a darker more cynical message or story that he’s trying to convey that most people seem to miss or don’t want to believe. So you have to follow Kubrick’s own advice when it comes viewing this film: Pay very close attention with your EYES. Don’t assume you know what the film is about. And don’t be overly distracted by the lack of dialogue or believe that the surface plot is all there is, because there are a number of red herrings & strange continuity errors which appear throughout the film that tell you something more unusual or even sinister is occurring. Once you do that, you’ll start questioning everything you’re seeing! And please ignore the Hollywoodish 1984 sequel for answers or clarification...it completely misses the subversive message of 2001.
