The book was excellent. For me, it was the best of the Eragon world. It’s hard to give a review without spoilers, but I will do my best.
I enjoyed Murtagh’s character development. I almost forgot that we don’t get much of his story during the Inheritance cycle, so the flashbacks are welcomed. His character is different enough than Eragon to make him his own, and I found myself enjoying how broken Murtagh and Thorn are. The differences in the way they communicate, the difference in training, all of that just created a contrast that sets these two apart.
My favorite aspect of the book was the second half buildup. I found myself physically frustrated at times with what was happening, but could not put the book down. And then the moments of climax were perfectly written. I felt the full range of emotions.
The entire book builds to an ending that felt neither contrived nor forced. It fit the characters without minimizing what they had become or their struggles, and it sets up a multitude of options for future books. I can’t wait.
Overall, this has been one of my favorite story’s in the series. Well done CP!
