At best, this was some well-intentioned but ultimately underwhelming fan fiction.
The narrative, character development, dialogue, and overall tone of the show was pedestrian. It lacked much of the sophistication and character depth of the games.
I’m neither put off nor enthused by “representation” in these stories. They are matter-of-fact realistic interpretations of the varieties we humans come in, wether it be race or sexual orientation. In the games in felt real and natural, but in this show it felt topical and forced. Given the fervor with which “representation” is being shoehorned into every other popular franchise, show or movie these days, it’s little wonder that the perceived motivation on the part of the writing staff, intentional or not, is met with groans and eye-rolling.
This was just a mostly failed effort in my opinion. Not the worst thing I’ve seen recently, but given how much I was looking forward to a real DA series, this was a big letdown for me.
Oh, and the animation was meh.
