The holdovers begins like many films about hated classics professors (think “Goodbye Mr. Chips). Then (spoiler alert) when all of the “held over” students are rescued from spending the holidays at school but one the film takes a subtle turn and becomes a little more. Yes there are a lot of inter generational buddy films but because of the sensitive acting by the three leads, the superior script and the refusal by the film makers to keep the characters one dimensional, this film rises above.
