I thought this would be a disaster....boy was I wrong! I was looking forward to taking my daughter (a big sonic fan and future gamer nerd like her old man) to see the movie but expected a sub par film that would be comically directed towards kids. And while there are some silly childish moments the film is actually quite hysterical.
We had such a blast seeing this movie! Jim Carrey (who let's be honest has been washed up since Mr Ploppers Penguins) was phenomenal as Dr Robotnik. You can tell from his performance that is reminiscent of his 90s characters such as Ace Ventura and the Mask that he had a great time filming this movie. I would dare say that this could be a major comeback for him. James Marsden is okay and has some humor but is about as average as you can get albeit still likeable. Then there is Sonic. There is compassion for the character while you still laugh throughout the film at his childlike qualities. The animation is great but there are some times I feel like the animators at times just did a simple face crop during dialogue scenes. The design is still solid and although cartoonish this is not a film to be taken super seriously as noticed by the government's approach to Sonic and Robotnik in the film.
There are a lot of Easter eggs in the film which should be easy to detect for any sonic fan who has followed the franchise like Sonic eating chili dogs, Sonic says Eggman instead of Robotnik, etc.
I loved this film as did my daughter. Who knew that out of all the video games turned into films (Assassin's Creed, Resident Evil, Super Mario Bros, Warcraft, Tekken, Streetfighter, etc.) that Sonic would turn out to be better because let's be honest..the game franchise has had a lot of downs more than ups in the past 25-30 years.
Fantastic job! Look forward to a sequel!!!
