I remember the good ol days of Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate. The dated mechanics, yeah, might not be easy to get back into, I mean, I don't know if there's even any multiplayer left to be honest, but it was my introduction into a series like no other. It was special. I have very fond memories, like my favorite great sword, the commemoration sword! And having that high ranking. Remembering my first rookie mistakes like mismatched armour and beating the dalamadur for the very first time and soloing it, for the very first time! Those were the days...
But, now we have a new generation of monsters to hunt in Monster Hunter Rise!!!
Ok, first cracking into the series is definitely not easy. It's essentially a game that centres it's enemies like bosses. In other words, it feels like you're only fighting bosses. (I mean, you can do other quests to kill smaller monsters, there's always those quests and you'll always start with them.)
So Monster Hunter Rise is set in the village of Kamura, a small village in (Insert map location here.), and you've finally graduated your hunter training! Now, it's time to work. (Sorry, I know it's a bad story explanation, but I don't want to spoil everything and I feel like I've spoiled enough already.)
You'll be pitted against Izuchi, Khezu, Zinorgres and Nargacugas, all of which won't go down without a fight. Pick your weapon! Your potential arsenal includes dual blades, long swords, gunlances, switch axes and hammers! (That's only a portion of the weapons included. There are many more.) My personal favorite is the Charge blade.
You won't always have to fight alone. You have palicoes, cat's that fight alongside you and palamutes that you can ride like horses and can also fight alongside you. There's also wirebugs you can use to traverse terrain and you can also utilise them for mounting and riding monsters. For newcomers from previous titles, what is this? You don't have to straight up topple them? YOU CAN RIDE THEM?! Why, yes you can!
You can launch monsters into walls or use them to attack other monsters! Professionally using this to your advantage can change everything during a hunt. For me though, I don't aim to mount them. No, it's not because...
Yes. It's because it's difficult with my weapon...
For people from previous titles, what monsters can you hunt? Well, personal favorites from past titles include: The bubble dragon, Mizitsune, Arzuros, Zinogre, Tobi-Kadachi, Pukei-Pukei, Barioth and Tigrex.
Now, for a few downsides...
1. Colour variant monster's aren't in this game
2. There's no G rank. Yet.
3. There's a lot of grinding involved.
4. The village quests stop at low rank.
5. Long swords. (Had to put a meta joke in.)
6. No voice chat. (This one doesn't hit me hard though, I hate using mics.)
For newcomers, Monster Hunter Rise can initially be a challenge, but the good news is, it's the easiest MH game. For veterans and pros, it combines the new with the old but never forgets what made it good. 9.2/10
