The virgin suicides is an intriguing commentary on womens relationship with religion and bodily autonomy. We slowly watch as the girls lose more and more of themselves to their parents conservative beliefs and restrictive household, the parents afraid of their daughters falling under the wrong influence blindly follow the words of every pastor in every sermon at every church, they themselves ironically become the blind sheep they fear their daughters will. We the viewers are helpless to watch these girls slow decent into melancholy and depression even losing touch with the outside world. This movie may seem hard to understand upon a first viewing but after a re watch it is clear to the viewers that this movie is talking about how religion treats women and further more how women perpetuate and ignore the blatant misogyny and mistreatment within organized religion. The lisbon sisters are taught to cover up, throw away their interests, and are hidden away from the whole world riddled with sin because they themselves are the reason it is that way. The girls lose hope in a tomorrow in a next week or any possible future in a world where they will always be the guilty perpetrators of sin. The girl's feel trapped and despite planning an escape they choose to die? why a viewer might ask upon first inspection it's stupid its unnecessary but it's the only way they will be free in their minds god loves all his children until they are a teenage girl.
