***Some Spoilers***I’m going to state this from the beginning of this review, this is not a show about “being woke”, it’s a modern representations of the comics for season one ending with The Doll’s House storyline. Instead of being based in 1988-90, it’s based in 2021. Now besides adjusting to current era based, a thirty year plus difference, it’s almost a direct representation of the comics, page for page. Alex Burgess was a gay man and did have a relationship with his lover named Paul, Hal was Rose Walker’s landlord who was a drag queen, the sisters (Chantel and Zelda), just like the comics never explained they were mother/daughter, sisters, or lovers; just described as soulmates and Judy was lesbian. All of this was in the comics 30+ years ago. This show was dedicated to people who loved the stories of The Endless and their universe. Even with the DC characters removed and certain gender/race swap roles made, the show is damn good and a great watch. Great casting, great story telling, especially intertwining Hob Gadelons story into the same episode of The Sound of Her Wings. The actor for Desire, though wished I’d see them more as Grin in Cowboy Bebop live action, but I’m satisfied with their role in The Sandman and it’s perfect. The only thing which was turned down for viewing standards for me was the episode 24/7 where it’s 10x more gruesome in the comic and Audible with the “24 Hours” chapter. Above all, read the comics or listen to Act 1 of the Audible audiobook to better understand the story before you go about saying this is a “woke show”. I enjoy this show and this universe and hope to see more of it. Wouldn’t mind a cameo of James McAvoy or Kat Dennings later on as a hat tip to the Audible series.
