3.5/5(prefacing this with, I rarely write reviews) I went into watching this movie with my only knowledge being it was Napoleon and Joaquin Phoenix, didn't watch any trailers or read any articles so I don't have any opinions other than what I saw in the theatre. In short, I liked it. The cinematography was pretty good, music was great and the acting was just generally alright but nothing special other than Joaquin Phoenix playing another miserable character. I felt that some of the gore was unnecessarily in your face, and was historically accurate on a baseline level. The part that really bugged me though was his alone time with Josephine. The theatre was a collective feeling of gross and my operative word here being "cringe". It felt like watching two seasons of a dramatized history channel and it began dragging on near the end. I wasn't necessarily disappointed, but I wouldn't pay to watch it again.
