This powerful 14 year old female protagonist, Estrella Thompson, a cultural cocktail of Trinidad, Cuba, and jamaica, scaled fish and sold in the market of her fishing village. sancoche, is her native dialec but she learnt to speak english and read on her own, which created an awareness of a universe and wanted to travel Europe. She wanted to earn shoes and work in the town. Estrella was among the children who had been raised in isolation on a crescent beach below the cliff and was forced by her dream to leave San Carlos fishing village to fend for herself while remaining focus.

I really enjoyed this book. A very necessary read for such a time. What stood out at me and made much sense is this: "The important stuff will still be important by the time you get to it". For example, you do not have to do what everyone is doing at the same time. The present moment is what counts. We are always rushing out of the present. The now is a gift and we will only be able to appreciate it, if we rid ourselves of the daily noises that surround us, only in stillness., we will be able to enjoy the power of NOW. We live in a fast paced world, we overthinik, we overdo and we are constantly trying to keep up and racing through. A good way might be to read a book!
