I am not an eloquent writer but here goes.
With all due respect, both ladies certainly don’t pass for white however I do appreciate casting great black women actors for this movie.
There are many subtle parts in the movie that show where Irene is jealous of Clare whereas Clare not so much- maybe experiencing a love like Irene and Brian.
My take on the ending is this- Irene felt that her life was crumbling; thoughts of losing her husband and family to Clare was driving her crazy and this is shown with her close male counterparts noticing her behavior, they knew and saw it too. What would anyone due if losing your whole entire life so yes, when Irene’s husband is lounging towards her, her hand was not placed in her backside, she didn’t get in front of Clare nor did she EXTEND her hand to protect her from John. It was a push backwards killing Irene. Why didn’t she run downstairs at the same time everyone else did? Now, go back to the movie, when Brian was consoling her, she kinda broke away from him to look at her hands- why would she do that? Reason, she had blood on her hands. Was she really crying over her friend’s loss or because she had blood on her hands or tears of joy that she had her husband back for good. The movie doesn’t show the minutes after Irene’s death or before Clare’s arrival from upstairs to see whether or not Brian was mourning the loss of his lover.
This movie makes you think.
