incredible film. Understanding racism is more than just "well my ancestors didn't own slaves so what did I do?" it's not just about you personally as a white person and your contribution to racism. As this film highlights, racism is a complex system of political and socio-economic levers and pulleys that have been around for generations in order to benefit white people. It's more than just slavery. If you're a white person and this film makes you uncomfortable or defensive, it should. Embrace the discomfort, the guilt, the anger, the confusion that comes with learning how white people have contributed to and facilitated oppression. Only once you've done that can you begin to LISTEN without your own prejudices clouding your judgement. It's not about being racist or not being racist, it's about educating yourself on how racism came to be and how it continues to thrive in the US and globally. Only then will you be able to move forward and make a positive impact on the conversation and the world.
