Being a fan of the original, I was very excited, but obviously hesitant for this movie. So many sequels in the past have failed but the point of this movie was to hit a new generation of kids that weren’t around during the hype of the first (the first was so good they made a cartoon).
Spoilers ahead.
Overall the movie was great, but some things felt “off” and rushed. For one, Lydia was a grown woman with the same hairstyle and same clothing choice that she’s had when she was a teenager. I realize they are trying to make her goth girl still, but maybe talk to adult goths to see what they wear?? She also seemed like a weak character, when she was stronger personality wise (for her age) in the original. Delia was great overall but her death seemed unnecessary. I loved Astrid but I can’t see Jenna Ortega mess up a role.
Some things about the movie, besides Lydia, that seemed weird. First as most have said, there seemed to be too many subplots and all these strong characters that suddenly weren’t strong when the time called for it. For example, it would have been fun to see a battle happen between beetlejuice and his wife. Her death was too quick.
The wedding scene was long and annoying. I realize they want to honour the original with a random dance scene, but in the original it wasn’t so long and crappy.
The murderous boyfriend was a great addition but again, the guy just gets thrown in hell. He “dies” so quickly.
And then there’s Astrid’s dad. What happened there? He acted like he and Lydia were never married.
Overall what pulled it all together was Michael Keaton who is an amazing actor and plays beetlejuice so well. It’s worth watching the movie to see him play this character. Hell I could watch hours of him just playing beetlejuice.
