Spoilers ahead.
I've never written a film review before, but I felt the need to. I've always been a big fan of the Matrix, the first being my favourite. I think they really came up with some revolutionary ideas and filming tricks, that still remain in everyone's head even after all these years.
Unfortunately Matrix 4 is quite the opposite. After watching the film, nothing really stood out to me. Is that because I only watched it once? Possibly. It is a hella long film though, full of romance, action, and for the first time, comedy. I wasn't actually expecting for it to be funny. What I mean is that it was trying to be funny, and some scenes made me laugh while others were a bit too cheesy for me.
I think where it starts to fall apart in the way it is filmed. It's a bit weird to hear Keanu in interviews talking about how hard he trained for this film. I mean... What the hell did he train for? He barely fought in the film, and his special ability was like a force shove. I was quite upset with that, I understand that he's older now so maybe he should have had a stunt double or something. This is the Matrix. If you can't fight good fights, what the point.
Things I loved:
- Lana was brave in her storytelling, and wasn't afraid of trying something new. The story was fresh, though it could have been executed a bit better as I found it quite confusing at times.
- The music was pretty decent.
- The chemistry between Keanu And Carrie-Ann.
- I found the actor playing Agent Smith to be quite interesting. I wish we could have seen more of an interaction with him and Neo... I mean it seems like they're good ol' buddies now.
Things I didn't love:
- Camera angles changed way too often, that it was quite jarring
- Bugs' enunciation, I mean I barely understood her at times.
- Some scenes went on too long, like the merovingian moaning and shouting. Yes we get it you're angry and upset, the camera kept panning back to him swearing. And then he just ran away after the fighting finished.
- I thought Sati was gonna be more interesting if I'm honest.
I'm giving it 3 stars because I'm conflicted. I love the Matrix, but maybe I need to watch this one again to enjoy it more.
