caveat: i'm halfway thru it. But i can say it is incredibly gripping, has beautifully crafted characters, and sheds alot of light on what is going on south of the border. It seems mildly sensational. The fact that the author is white and is transcending the language/culture barriers makes the book more powerful to me. But i'm just a sys hetero patriarch so my opinion is of no worth to the woke crowd.

Fabulous acting from Hawkins and Hawke. The stark poverty of their existence and the pain of their pasts is overwhelmed by her connection to the beauty she sees. There's a lesson here for all of us. The sound track transports you, esp the during the ending credits. It's a powerful movie. This hit me almost as hard as happy-go-lucky. Sally Hawkins must be a very interesting person!
