Set design in Barbieland is incredible—from the oceans to the buildings’ inner-mechanics it’s all reminiscent of Barbie play sets. It really takes you back and seeing all the small details referencing how it is to actually play with a Barbie in such a childish mindset warms my heart.
I’m not sure what this movie is rated, but in one of the scenes as soon as Barbie entered the real world she was immediately stared at, laughed at, and catcalled—a true representation of the female experience. That scene made me genuinely uncomfortable for having been stared at and spoken to in similar ways before I wholeheartedly hope it made men in the theatre double-think the way they perceive the act of catcalling and ogling women on the street.
There were scenes referencing the common experience of being mansplained and played instruments uncomfortably by boys and honestly it was good to see—all done in a humorous manner, it reminds me of so many boys who tried these awkward flirting tactics or ways of talking to me and I can’t help but laugh seeing how the Barbie’s were similarly uncomfortable/disinterested. I can see why it upset many men…but this movie wasn’t made for them lol so drop 5 stars if you care about some honest and humorous representation of the female experience.
