As a long-time reader, I find myself laughing and getting emotionally invested in the story and getting a deeper relationship with characters that were not in the light as much in the manga. The best example is Kaya's portrayal and her relationship with Ussop is established where in the Manga was not.
The spirit of the characters is portrayed well and it communicates better in the tone of a more "real life" situation, Luffy is not as goofy and careless as the Manga is, but he is portrayed as a freedom-loving person who is spontaneous with his plans, he is known to be emotionally smart and it translates so well in the life action because it made him a compassionate leader by default, hence his actions made sense why he's pursuing to help people that are "restrained".
I hope to see more seasons to this because the idea it shares is such a breath of fresh air to the world! that people can dream and choose to pursue their dreams, and Luffy's dream is to want to be free. A dream that maybe most of us have, but choose to abandon because it's too "unrealistic".
