This is a show that really seems to struggle with its own identity. The show tries to cover a very large amount of different topics, storylines, time periods, and messages.
Without committing seriously to any one, or even just two, of these themes, the show suffers a great deal. The writing and pacing are choppy and will frequently take you out of the moment.
The show doesnt have the courage to be as dark and violent as it should be. There is a fine line between glorifying violence (and subsequently idolizing these terrible people) and showcasing the reality behind the brutal actions of a sick man. "Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story" refuses to even try to tread the line and it creates a story that is enticing enough to keep you watching, but ultimately disappoints without grounding you in the truth of the disgusting acts of violence committed by the titular character.
After creating intrigue of these real life events, it is clear to see that this show creates frequent falsifications of facts, and takes large creative liberties to tie the story together. Searching for articles and reports on the facts shows many holes and farsical storytelling throughout the show.
If the show was willing to choose a singular path, then the result would be all the better for it.
A commitment to a story that showcases the whole truth of Dahmers atrocities, or a commitment to removing our society's sick fascination towards these human monsters and instead memorializing the victims and their families would have been a stronger message to relay.
