I wasn't going to watch this movie, but someone posted a thread about someone who dared to watch it during the flight. Ok, decided to watch the film, especially when learned it had been nominated for the Palme d'Or.
IMO it's not really anything new, yes, but there are a few moments I find especially remarkable about the movie:
- it's quite realistic in terms of Cinderella-like stories and in fact is opposed to "Pretty Woman"
- it's good to watch a movie to reflect on the women who should teach themselves to have enough honor, dignity, self-respect and strength not to become sex-workers and/or naive household wives deciding to marry the young, infantile, but rich, fools.
- the ending is perhaps the reason why it's called a "comedy", bcs it's not fun to watch the movie apart from some parts with the priest. The last part is a bit of a joke regarding "men abusing women", bcs it may be the other way around
- can be a good reminder that enough money doesn't make you a human, especially a worthy one. That's, once again, not a warranty for a good life
- kinda stereotypic about the cultural differences
The picture is good, acting is good as well. Tho I think the Igor's playing wasn't that much difficult, it's a trivial way to oppose Russian's "deep soul" to Americans obsessed with money. I'd say the best playing is done by the priest, Ani, her stupid colleague, Ivan and his parents
Cons:
- too many realistic sex scenes /nudity
- might be wrongly interpreted by the younger audience
- too long, could've easily been 1.5 times shorter
