Another film where a woman who has had a nervous breakdown, always a woman who can't cope with her life! It's so aggravating that it's always women who can't cope with life's difficulties but never a man. Men are never having trouble coping with their lives? But of course men don't ever have mental issues with life? That's why men are in constant denial of their own issues & end up alcoholic, or with drug abuse. They can't cry, or fall deeply in love. They convince themselves that they're only interested in sexual gratification and that's why I believe we are always involved in "the battle of the sexes" so to speak. I guess I'm one of those people that believe that many societies believe that men are "indestructible"! I've been watching several of these types of films & I never see the man having a breakdown, only women! In a broader perspective that may be why we find ourselves at war so often! I can only think of one movie where the man is mentally ill & that's Psycho! I believe that if men were to be able to show their emotions openly without it being violently related (which seems to be the only acceptable way for men to show their emotions we'd be in a much better place in the world) I can't honestly think of one film that they cast a man having a breakdown, can you? This film is a typical film where the woman is in a shameful position of having been institutionalized for a breakdown! Men have anxiety attacks, empathy, no they're not a real man if they even dare to expose that they too have emotional needs & desires. It's so sad & this film is a terrific example of how women can fall apart and how they should be ashamed of themselves! We all are Human Beings, we all have tough times but to admit that is crazy for if you do you'll be right back to where you came from! And how can we afford that nowadays! No we can't so many go online to find their way. We're isolated, we can't talk to anyone about our problems anymore because they have enough problems to contend with themselves. Jean Simmons was a GREAT actress, she deserved much better roles then this one. But if you're a fan she's great in this film. But I have to agree with Robert Mitchum in one of his last interviews on TCM with Jane Russell (I never cared for her but they were close friends) He said how many great screenplays were passed up because of the people who ran the studios thought that they wouldn't make good money or cost too much to produce. If you want to look up the interview it was with Robert Osborne on TCM, of course!
