Beautifully filmed, acted and executed story. Though it seems it tells an old story of ruthless capitalism, thuggish lawlessness and ethnic cleansing there is at its heart a much bolder story of feminism and racism, the horrors of surviving in a world in which one’s gender or ethnicity are immediately stacked against one; rarely highlighted in a western setting.
The main characters are outstanding as are the transient appearances of some old school actors, well known actors and promising newcomers. Cordelia is bold, assertive, romantic, brutal and beautiful. Eli is practical, pragmatic, aware, intelligent, caring and equally beautiful.
Stand out support roles are the hideously psychopathic Melmont, the kind, procedural but jaded Sheriff. The utterly vindictive Black eyed Mog (you won’t believe she’s played by the same actress who once gave us Sheila Sabatini, the acid tongued surgeon of Surgical Spirit an 80s British sit com). Mesmerising, poetic, powerful and visually stunning.
