SPOILERS
Unfortunately Google forces me to give this film a star.
I've seen other reviews from people claiming this to be a 4 or 5 star class of film, justified by their mind-boggling attitude of "appreciate the film we've got".
These are the people directly reasonable for the decline of quality in cinema as they can "yes-man" a director in to thinking they have done a great job when they have truly ruined a franchise.
The Pros:
Cinematography has some call-backs to the style of the first film as well as the second. Some of the early kill shots have some dynamics to them but after it was done once I found it rather repetitive.
But there are some really nice shots in this film.
The score is great, really diverse in tone and guides the emotion of scenes to the best of its ability. Hats off to the sound team in general as it was punchy and thumpy where it needed to be and more subtle in those quiet and intense scenes.
Some humorous dialog between throw-away characters and main characters but nothing special or unheard of.
The Cons:
Where to begin.
Some of the characters are inconsistent in both actions and emotions. This is at no fault of the actors. Its a problem with the script. The level of stupidity in the thought process of some of the characters is nothing short of excrement.
"OH LOOK AN INFECTED LADY GIVING BIRTH! LETS HOLD HER HANDS WHILST SHE DOES IT"
You cant be serious.
The dad can guess where his kid has gone with his mother based on his last conversation with him. But adopts the mentality of 'they'll be fine' right until the end of the film.
Generally everyone in this film apart from the infected are inconsistent.
The few military characters in this film are not military trained. This being based on their actions. They were designed to be murdered by infected. Not to murder infected.
28 Years Later and there are no signs of any deranged beyond humanity individuals. Even the guy that we know to be "crazy" is polite beyond reason for a man who has lived in isolation whilst being surrounded by infected for 13 years. The only thing that makes him crazy is being dedicated to the memory of the dead by creating effigies using human remains. Yeah, very crazy indeed. But socially unphased by the struggle of 13 years? I think not.
The last 5 minutes of this film is what truly angered me. Danny Boyle handed the script to Guy Richie and was like "mate can you just finish off the last 5 minutes of this film for me? I really can't be arsed"
Some over the top zombie killing montage performed by droogs from Clockwork Orange who all look like Jimmy Saville. Its just stupid.
Its clear that they are setting up for a part two. Yes. 28 Years Later PART II.
There is lots more wrong about this film but if you watch it, you will understand my frustration in this review.
Danny, I love your films man. I really do. But this has stained your career. I'm just here to be real with you.
