I was looking to learn something I didn’t already know about minimalism - and this missed the mark. The whole documentary feels like a cheesy self help book with lots of emotive language and tears but not much substance or actual advice.
- What should I do when I actually need the sewing kit I threw away because I haven’t used it in 3 weeks?
- Is it really minimalism if I get rid of my coffee machine and go to coffee shops instead? Have I not just outsourced my need for stuff to other people?
- If I’m invited to a costume party but I threw away all my costumes should I not go? Or should I buy one and then immediately toss it?
- If I want to go camping in the summer but don’t have a tent anymore, shall I accept that dropping this hobby will make me happier?
There’s a lot of focus on acquiring stuff for the sole purpose of “keeping up with the Jones’s.” But what if the Jones’s had this great house and all this nice stuff so they could throw the best parties for their friends?
I’m really struggling to see how this documentary convinces anyone to get rid of stuff except those who’ve just collected Knick-knacks and obsolete DVDs.
