Can only follow with the other reviews. I did like 'I am Pilgrim' a lot.
Although I've written spoiler alert ahead I think it's best to read it to avoid wasting your time.
(SPOILER ALERTS)
I saw a review that said "it seems to convenient that we never saw the effects of the terror attack" and now this book tries to knit together the combination of the terror occuring but also giving the superhero a chance to rectify it with a time travelling submarine. The first 2 and a half parts were a decent spy novel, still can get exasperated by Terry Hayes attention to insignificant details and ignorance to flagrant flaws in his stories.
There are also big flaws to the spies knowledge, how would someone with such intelligence be surprised that a pressurized fire extinguisher would explode upon being lit?
Why would his wife be allowed access to all these details of a mission?
Then the cheesy bits were just annoying, rising from the submarine and by pure chance the person he encounters 24 years into he future is his son? I was dreading that as soon as I read it that it would turn out to be his child and then when his sister comes in with cheesy lines like "hey sis" just made me cringe. Then they decide he should travel back, they fix the submarine in three weeks and in one page he travels back with no difficulty? Also the dialogue really does not impress me. Constantly trying to show a casual side to people in the worst situations and showing that no character in the book possesses a natural sense of humour, just tacky.
The whole book was an exhausting read and I have regrets finishing it. It's is abundantly obvious that he got tired near the end of this and it seems the editor did as well with the way some of his sentences were poorly structured.
I'm not only disappointed, I am somewhat angry. This book shows a clear lack of respect to Hayes's audience
