I don’t see this movie as just a love story. To me, it’s really about this eight-year-old boy dealing with the loss of his mom and trying to cope. Jonah's search for a new mom is about his need to heal. He sees his dad struggling with grief and thinks if he can find someone to fill that void, everything will be okay.
When Jonah rejects Veronica, it shows he misses his mom and realizes she can’t be replaced. He’s looking for comfort in a woman he’s never even met, and decided to go to NY, but in reality he probably wants his Mom, which is so typical for kids they often fantasize about fixing their pain.
And when Jonah’s dad, Sam, worries that he might have messed things up for them, that really hit me. It shows how both of them are trying to heal their grief and reconnect. Jonah’s story for me is about more than just love; it’s about hope and the desire for a new family.
