I love this film despite the sometimes rough editing. I loved the album too although I came to the album many years after I'd seen the film.
Jimmy is the archetypal disaffected youth on the cusp of manhood. He's desperate to fit in but has no clue as to what is available to fit into.
His parents don't understand him, his friends look up to him but he has no concept of his charisma and his self doubt won't allow him to fulfil his potential.
His limited horizons come to the fore in the last act when he comes to the realisation that even those he admires are trapped in their own mundanity.
The music is driving, the lyrics raw and the emotions even more so.
It's not the best edited film ever, it's not the best soundtracked film ever, it's not the best scripted... but it is potentially the best, most realistic portrayal of youth in all it's glorious, misguided naivety you will ever see.
Watch it and weep. I did.
