The biggest complaint levied at this book is a ‘lack of plot’. This is a claim with zero basis.
If you read past the first 20 pages, which all expertly craft the world in which Winston lives in through impactful quotes such as ‘War is Peace | Freedom is Slavery’, you’d understand that the plot is blatant.
Winston doesn’t like the party. Winston has to be secretive while writing in a journal. Then Winston meets Julia. The plot then continues (I don’t wish to spoil potential readers). To say there is no plot is blatantly ignoring the entire novel because you don’t find the plot interesting. Which, if political dystopians aren’t your jam, I can understand not enjoying the plot. But to claim boldly that there is NO plot is simply absurd.
George Orwell crafted a perfect dystopian novel with characters with intense and intricate inner lives. These inner lives cannot be dwelled on due to the world the story exists in.
If you enjoy long narratives with emphasis on character’s thoughts this novel fits perfectly.
Overall, 5 stars but I can see why some would find it drab.
