I feel like the movie has a very powerful message of recovering bfom a mental breakdown due to societal isolation. The story of shoya slowly starting to open up and taking Xs off people's face, nd also his urge to talk and to be friend with Shoko, this is like his heart's last effort of making up to what happened. On the other hand, Shoko hates herself for her disability, she hates how she cant hear, she hates how Shoya bullied him and then get bullied, she hates how she ruined everything, which is totally not her fault. It's js really heartbreaking when u see a helpless Shoko despite being bullied still feeling sorry for what happened.
I love how Shoya slowly opened up to people especially the green hair fat guy, that dudes energy is just so funny lol, and it js lifts the others' eneergy up i think.
The event that happened on the bridge, is just a look at Shoya's past and how it has left a scar on him. He doesnt want to talk about it and as a coping mechanism, he started to blame everyone, himself include; he wanted to say that everything was just as guilty yet he was the only one being punished, he started to isolated himself. yet still, he wanted to talk to Shoko. He hates everyone but Shoko in that moment, this is like his mind still trying to redeem itself. Icant be sure if he really likes Shoko or is it just himself trying to make up with what has happened.
The topic of friendship is also a thing i really enjoyed. I cried whe the green guy cried hugging Shoya saying they are friends and he will be there for him. It's just so heartwarming to see friends hv friends moment. yk. As he said, maybe being friends is just as simple as talking to each other. maybe being friends is just about checking in when the other is having a hard time. Maybe its just that simple. Yet still, being friends is to be able to forget the past, to popen up and to forgive.
I saw a review saying that Shoko is just a flat character with little to no character developmenty and is a poor demonstration of deafness, yet i believe it's not what the movie is about. The movie is about how people feel helpless and start to hate themselves. This we can see clearly in Shoko, she is just helpless and strated to hate herself, for the way she is. She cant say nothing but sorry, she hated her own existence, she hated the trouble she caused for simply existing, leading to her decision to kill herself. The movie is a portrayal of mental illness, and the character's journey for finding light and hope again, both accepting the past and accepting they way they are, and i think that is what important and why the movie is so beautiful yet gives off an uncomfortable vibe.
