Modern JRPGs should learn from this game. It's got a really indepth story and challenging gameplay. The story has quite a bit of depth, it's not generic heroes beat the big bad or do mcguffin quest and everything is ok. The story is broad enough to show that under slightly different circumstances the heroes might be wrong and different factions could be right.
The gamplay has a lot of depth and has unique difficulty settings, instead of overall easy, medium, hard it lets you choose enemy low, medium, high enemy stats and level of aggression and overdrive bar (unique mechanic) to customise your experience. There are lots of different stratergies and ways you can build your team and there is enough depth and challenge to the battles to where you can't just spam the same stratergy and moves over and over again (unless you set everything to easy/low).
Because of the unique overdrive mechanic where doing certain actions and taking damage will push the meter forward, granting bonues but too far forward and you become vulnerable, you have to think on your feet and adapt in battle. If the enemy target is aggressive then you may want to keep your overdrive meter low to avoid getting in the red, but at the same time you may want to apply buffs and heal yourself before the enemy turn but doing so would push the overdrive meter closer to the red zone. Judgement calls like that add a lot of depth to the gameplay and make battles very engaging.
