It has been many years since I read the book, but the movie was not true to the original story in many respects. The 1930 movie was much more in line with the book. Remarque was brilliant, and this was probably his best work. Remaining more true to the book would have made a stronger movie. I think if someone has not read the book, the movie might be better perceived. I certainly enjoyed the movie, and would definitely recommend it.
