Godzilla: King of the Monsters is not only my favorite Godzilla movie, but my favorite movie of all time. If you read my review for Godzilla 14, you would know I'm a big fan of the franchise.
First, the characters. The characters in this movie are extremely compelling. The movie tells the story of a family torn apart by the attacks in Godzilla 14, a nice callback to the first movie while establishing a new narrative. All the actors do great jobs portraying their characters. Dr. Serizawa's death scene was emotionally powerful, and I found Emma's redemption arc to be quite compelling. Mark goes from a man who hates all Titans to one who fights alongside them. And Madison goes from a girl who obeys her mother at all times to an independent person.
Second, the score in this movie is amazing. Rebirth, the theme which played during Godzilla's rebirth scene, is amazing. It's a remaster of the classic Godzilla theme while introducing a chanting choir, making it foreboding and epic at the same time. Mothra's theme, as well, is amazing. And the music which plays during the final battle is well choreographed.
Finally, the action and scale in this movie is stunning. The monsters were all done with motion capture, and are extremely emotive, especially Godzilla. The action in this movie delivered, and while I did enjoy the build up to the final fight in the first movie, I really found myself on the edge of my seat every time a monster fight happened.
Overall, I adore this movie, and it's my favorite movie of all time and my favorite Godzilla movie. 10/10.
