The fact that the prog film reviewers uniformly hate this movie while the public loves it is all you need to know. The film works on many different levels - as brutally honest history, social commentary, a love story, a heroic action flick. The shocking amount of violence, blood-letting and murder may be too much for some viewers, but is accurate. Rudy Youngblood is excellent as the central character who is taken prisoner and almost becomes a blood sacrifice before astronomical events interfere and he gets his chance at freedom. Mel Gibson should consider making a sort-of sequel about Hernan Cortes and how he put an end to the butchering and enslaving monarchies of indigenous Meso-America in the early 16th century.
