I actually watched this film with the actual soldiers involved in the battle. Lt.Colonel Harry SMITH is a friend of mine as is Bob Buick, Dave SABBEN and Jim RICHMOND (who was severly wounded during the battle).
Firstly I'd like to say that the props eg: weapons, uniforms and other equipment were pretty well done. The battle scenes were fairly realistic (according to Harry and Bob).
What let this film down badly was the portayal of the real men. I can assure you that Harry SMITH did not assault his soldiers, especially the late Paul LARGE. The late Paul LARGE did not attack or assault Harry. That was cringe worthy.
In the movie they portrayed Harry as firing pistols at the enemy. Harry DID not carry a pistol during the battle or whilst he was out in the field. He did carry one around the Task Force Base at Nui Dat. They also showed the Company position being in a depression in the ground allowing them to stand during the battle. This did not happen. In reality they could not even lift their heads 12 inches for fear of having it shot off.
But as Harry and Bob and the other diggers involved on the day said, "It is not a documentary, it is a movie. It has been made for entertainment". One thing about it is that it will give the general public an idea of just how hard Delta Company fought on the 18th of August 1966.
