This is one of the best books I have ever read. It may not be for everybody, but it resonates on so many levels. The book follows the life of History teacher, Dunstan Ramsey, from his boyhood, through the First World War, and into the present day, where he is being honored at his retirement from the University that he devoted his life to. Unexpectedly, his life takes a strange turn, when an incident from his youth, involving a thrown snowball concealing a rock, hits the pregnant Mrs. Dempster instead of him. This event has been causing him guilt for his entire life, and finally catches up to him in the present. It is the first book in the Depford Trilogy, but it stands very well on its own.
