A curious, epic, book, beautifully written. It had everything. Romance, tragedy, love, determination, history. I got totally involved with the characters. Not at all what I normally read. I read Tolkien, Natalie Haynes, Sophie kinsella. I'm now going to look for other books written by Tracy Chevalier. What a great writer.

I bought a copy of this book after I read lotr and the hobbit and began on the silmarillion then onto unfinished tales. This book was invaluable. When I couldnt quite remember how certain things fitted together. It is like a tolkein dictionary, so it tells you about the character or place you are interested in, but it then also tells you where to find it in tolkeins books. A brilliant companion book
