I can’t help but feeling that this entire movie is a squandered opportunity to compassionately address the real issues facing gay teens in America today. Its something I don’t know much about but expected to get more of a toehold in this movie. As fun as it is to watch Meryl Streep, James Corden, Nicole Kidman, etc romp around and play act at Broadway, the film shouldn’t be about them. Its not their story to tell. The Fosse-esque tone, while charming and well executed, distances the authenticity and relevance of the title character further and prevents the viewer from having much emotional stake in the film.
